Quite recently we told you about MonPwr a handy utility to turn off the monitor on laptops and netbooks. Dark is another freeware utility which performs the same action.

Dark allows you to turn off the display monitor on laptops and netbooks by double clicking on the system tray icon. Once you double click the power to the laptop monitor will be turned off.

The Techie Buzz team frequently meets online for virtual conferences. Usually, this is a secluded and polite “Hello, everybody” affair that everyone wants to get into (before the serious stuff starts) without much hassle. The “without too much hassle” bit is helped a lot by web-based online chat rooms. These are nifty web-based tools that (usually) do not require registration to use. Just type in your chat room’s name, your name and you will be presented with a URL that you can pass on to your fellow chatters and they can just as easily dive into the conversation. Here is a list of conversation-starters!

Tinychat: The most prevalent and most used web-based chat client. It’s easy to see why – “registration” is merely typing in the name of your room and your username can either be a normal nickname, Twitter name or Facebook name. It is rich, fast and supports webcams as well! If you prefer to register, you can customize your room; however we swear by it as a great handler of temporary conference chat rooms!

Chatzy: A slightly less browser-intensive, but nevertheless equally friendly is Chatzy. The home page greets you with a form to start a free private chat which is basically his:

It foregoes the “send email” step that is necessary with Tinychat. Very neat!

YapChat: Though this service does not allow the creation of user-defined rooms without registering, it is still quite easy to join an already created room without much hassle – just “sign in” as a guest.

JWChat: The necessary Open Source alternative that prevails every product list (!), here is the lightweight Jabber/XMPP client based off the web. Registering is necessary, but is as easy as typing in your desired username and password and checking “Register New Account”.

Once logged in you can create your own group room and invite other jwchat users to join in. Quite useful and incredibly easy when you already have a Jabber account (e.g. if you use Google Chat, you are already using Jabber)

Meebo: Yes I know this is a web based IM client, but it does support free chat rooms! All you have to do is make an account on Meebo and share the room URL with your friends. Pretty neat, huh?

ChatMaker: Pretty much identical to Tinychat (where it comes to general features), it is a decent alternative – quick and fast!

WebChattr: (Upcoming) This is a generic online chat room maker but with the functionality of supporting the iPhone and iPod Touch. This added touch (sorry) would definitely be something to look out for once this goes live for public users!

Mininova.org, one of the biggest and most popular torrent services has just lost a battle in court. As a result, they are deleting a large number of torrents from their servers that they don’t have rights to distribute.

As this blog entry explains, Mininova is limiting itself to Content Distribution Service. It means, they can only distribute the content for which they have distribution rights and all the other stuff just goes out the window. There is no specific information of how many torrents would be deleted but speculation is that it will be in tens of thousands.

This is a sad day for thousands of users who get most of their content such as music and movies through torrents. Do you think the same would happen to other torrent sites as well? What are some of the alternates now?

KwiClick is a great Firefox Add-on that increases your productivity by adding Google Search and a lot of other options to your right-click menu. Once installed, the add-on lets you set up a number of mouse options to perform various functions. For example, you can highlight a word on any page and you will see a search KwiClick option when you open the right-click menu. Choosing that will search Google for the highlighted word and open results in a small window that you can look at while browsing the internet.

If you are more of a social network addict, you can set that option to search Twitter instead of Google. There a number of providers you can choose from including YouTube, Yahoo!, Veoh, Delicious e.t.c. You can also set options to open the results in a new window or new tab.

You can also use KwiClick to share links and videos on various social networks like Facebook and Twitter. KwiClick allows you to watch videos while you browse the web and email them to your friends with a single click. Here is a complete list of things that you can do with KwiClick.

KwiClick is one of those tools that are packed with features but struggle with user-friendliness. KwiClick is a great tool but it can be even better if it is tweaked for a smoother experience.

Sometimes when we are running many programs at a time, the computer becomes slow. This is because of a few processes that consume a lot of memory and resources.

Process Freezer is a light-weight tool that helps you to suspend and resume resource consuming processes whenever you want instead of terminating the process.

It has a very simple interface which is easy to understand. This tool is very helpful when you are running too many processes. You can suspend one process while working on another using this tool and hence maintain the speed of the computer.

For example, when you are using Firefox, you would be noticing that it consumes a lot of memory. If you want to use another program along with Firefox, Process Freezer comes in handy. Using this tool, you can just freeze one program while you are working on the other and resume it back again.

Process Freezer is a great tool for people using slow computers. Users can suspend and release processes whenever they want to. In addition, it is a very light-weight tool. It consumes less than 1 MB of your computer space.

On the other hand, it could have improved it’s interface to be a little more attractive. It could have given more details about the processes running. However, this is a very useful tool.

I have been using the same set of bookmarks for the last 6-7 years by regularly backing up bookmarks and synchronizing them across computers and browsers. Considering that it has been so long, I am pretty sure that there are several bookmarks which are actually dead links, maybe because the website shut down or maybe because the website was shifted to a new location.

Sifting through the bookmarks to find dead links after all these years is pretty cumbersome if not impossible. In comes AM-DeadLink a excellent freeware utility which will scan your bookmarks and allow you to delete dead bookmarks from Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer.

You can install the software on your PC, or choose to install it as a portable software. Once installation is complete, launch the software and choose the browser you want to scan the bookmarks for and click on the Scan button.

The scanning process may take a few minutes depending on the number of bookmarks you have, in my case it took a little over 10 minutes. Once the scan is complete you will see the error and status for the bookmark URL. If you see errors in the bookmark, you can easily delete it using AM-DeadLink.

AM-DeadLink is an excellent software which will help you organize your bookmarks and get rid of the unwanted ones. The fact that it allows you to manage bookmarks for multiple browsers makes it more useful.

Though AM-DeadLink is not for everyday use, you can always use it whenever you perform your computer maintenance to cleanup your dead bookmarks. Am-DeadLink is compatible with Windows 7.

I don’t know about you, but I really don’t like the sponsored results and the textual ads in the default Google search results while I’m using the Google Chrome web browser. The sponsored results and ads aren’t only a distraction, they will also sometimes lead you to scams and rip-offs. It all depends on how well Google decides to police their income streams.

That’s exactly what I don’t like and I’ll show you how to banish these awful ads from your Google Chrome web browser.

We’ll set you up with a new search engine called “Scroogle” because it’s the only search site that does not contain advertisements or sponsored results. They don’t keep search records, they don’t leave cookies behind, and they provide completely anonymous searches even at work or on a public network. Don’t worry that you’ve never heard about them. Here’s the Scroogle story in a pictogram:

To set Scroogle as your search default, follow these simple steps:

1. Use the wrench pull down menu to open the “Options” dialogs.

2. Click the “Manage” button in the “Default Search” section.

3. Click the “Add” button to add a new search provider.

4. Add “Scroogle” as the search provider and in the URL field, enter the following text:

http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/nbbw.cgi?Gw=%s

5. Click “OK” to save the new search engine. Next use the “Make Default” button to make Scroogle your favorite search engine.

6. Click through the “Close” buttons and you’re ready to rock the web!

CodePad is a simple web based compiler/interpreter, and a collaboration tool. To get started – just paste your code, CodePad runs it and gives you a short URL which can shared with friends via chat or email.
