Google Search has had tough competition lately with the introduction of Bing. However, the innovation @Google never ends and they have been continuously updating their search to make it much better and useful to users.

Some recent introductions in Google Search labs include:

• Social search: Allows you to find results from your social contacts in search results.
• Keyboard shortcuts: Allows you to browse the results using your keyboard.
• Accessible View: Allows you to navigate search results quickly and easily.

In addition to that, Search Engine Land is reporting that Google is also playing around with a new sidebar which will make the search results more jazzier.

From the looks of it, it definitely looks more jazzier, however, it is also more useful as the sidebar sports links to narrow the search down to particular segments like images, news, books, maps and so on.

In addition to that, the search also provides related suggestions under the “See also” category. This can come in pretty handy when users are trying to use Google to search for travel destinations since they have more similar options to search from.

Overall the new interface is pretty exciting and it will be good to see it being rolled out soon. One thing is for sure, search is the bread and butter for Google and they will never be buoyed down by competition. And any innovation is always good for consumers like us, may it be new features or new competition, it is a win win situation.

Sometime back we told you about a trick to bypass the time limits imposed by Megavideo a popular site for watching videos. Megavideo imposes a limit of 72 minutes of continuous video watching till it pops up a alert saying that you need to wait for a certain time before you can watch the video.

This can be quite annoying when you want to watch longer videos continuously for free. The trick we told you previously helped many users to bypass those limits, however, we came across some new tricks to bypass the limit.

The first one includes getting a new video URL by visiting Mega Streaming and using it to watch the video instead of the regular Megavideo URL. The second one includes using a Firefox add-on called IIIitmux.

You will need to generate the URL and use the add-on before you start watching the video. Have fun watching full videos at Megavideo without interruptions.

Google Image Search is a pretty good image search engine. However the way the images are displayed is pretty Plain Jane. Google has now introduced a new experiment in Google Labs called Google Image Swirl, which will allow you to browse related images in a pretty cool interface.

Google Image Swirl organizes image search results based on their visual and semantic similarities and presents them in an intuitive exploratory interface.

If you often bookmark web pages and the bookmarks toolbar gets crowded over time, this bookmark menu extension for Firefox would be immensely helpful. It can turn your bookmarks toolbar into a button, allowing you to access your Firefox bookmarks without requiring you to display the bookmarks toolbar.

Here is how the browser interface looks after you have installed the bookmark menu extension:

There aren’t much options available, apart from searching the bookmarks using keywords. Middle clicking a bookmark opens it in the background and “Open all bookmarks in tabs” feature is added in subsequent sub folders.

The extension is good and helpful if you bookmark a lot of pages and want an easy option to access the bookmarks without using the toolbar. However, the same can be achieved using the Firefox hot key (Ctrl+B) which displays all your bookmarks in the sidebar.

If you would like to have more control over the attached USB devices in your system, USB manager will prove to be useful. It is a nice little freeware application for Windows that can quickly enable or disable all USB devices in your system. You can even password protect USB devices so that no one else can access the USB ports in your absence.

How to use Usb Manager

Download USB Manager and install it. The software is compatible with Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. After the installation is complete, you will see a system tray icon which looks similar to a USB drive.

Right click the icon and you will have all the options to tweak USB Manager.

You can disable USB printers, scanners and attached audio devices using this tool. To lock a USB drive, go to options and choose a password. It’s that simple.

To lock your USB storage devices, you need to first choose a password. After you have chosen a password from the options panel, click the USB manager icon from system tray and select “Disable all storage devices”. Anyone trying to disable USB manager from system tray will have to enter the password that you have chosen earlier. Killing the USB Manager process from task manager won’t help either. You cannot access the USB drive as long as it’s disabled and the program is installed in your system.

You can auto run USB Manager with Windows start up and use a custom hot key to lock all USB devices instantly. This software can be useful when you don’t want anyone to access the USB devices of your system in your absence. For example: someone may try to copy important files from your system or run a malicious script etc.

USB manager is cool and works perfectly in Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. If the manufacturer could include automatic locking of USB drives after a predefined timed interval, it would be even more beneficial.
